J. Trout Lowen

I am a journalist, an editor, and a hopeless book nerd living in Minneapolis, Minnesota with my three demanding cats.

As a writer-turned-editor, I take great pleasure in helping others craft artful, elegant prose. I enjoy sleuthing out the structure of a piece, setting its organization to rights, and unblocking its flow. With dynamite if necessary. I delight in finding the perfect word or phrase that turns a muddy sentence crystal clear. I get a deep satisfaction from the smell of a freshly printed page.

During my career, I have crafted first-edition textbooks, edited fiction and nonfiction manuscripts, and translated “wonk” into English for an influential public policy journal. I have sat at the helm of a venerable women’s magazine, a glossy lifestyle magazine, and a metro weekly. My articles have appeared in Utne, Minnesota Monthly, Minnesota Medicine, and many other newspapers, magazines, and websites.

For a brief and shining moment, I taught writing at the University of Minnesota as an adjunct instructor.
